PREGO REFLECTION:
As I come to my prayer, I read the first few words of this
gospel and remember that I am “praying alone in the presence of Jesus”. I take
time to come to stillness, to be with the Lord. Slowly I read the gospel
passage. Perhaps I try to be with Jesus and the disciples in my imagination… or
maybe I simply listen to Jesus’ questions asked of me personally. Who do I say
that Jesus is? For others? For me? I ponder… I may like to notice what I am
thinking or feeling as I hear Jesus speak of his suffering, rejection,
death…...and rising to new life? I share with the Lord… Perhaps I consider what
it means for me to “renounce myself”, to “take up my cross”, to “lose my life
in order to save it”? I talk with the Lord, as one intimate friend to another,
about the ways in which he is calling me to follow him. When I am ready, I end
my prayer slowly, asking for whatever grace I need. I make a slow sign of the
cross.

WEEKLY
RAMBLINGS:
Greeting from Halifax, Nova Scotia (when written &
Ireland when read!!)
I had the most amazing experience at the Church of the
Nativity last Saturday evening - I was able to see in person how a very well
structured Parish with an incredible number of volunteers bend over backwards
to make everyone coming to the Parish for Mass completely welcome and at home.
I also had the opportunity to chat with quite a number of
staff and volunteers about their roles and how they bring all of these
experiences together and just how essential to what is happening is their team
work and preparation. Whilst we don't have all the resources that the Church of
the Nativity have available to them (nor the experience of the many years of
trial and error that has allowed them to reach this stage) we do have a group
of committed people with whom we can work to reflect on what might be possible.
The trip to Halifax made even my worst experience of ...
(add any airline flying to Tasmania) seem OK. There were high winds in the
Toronto area (stopping off place on the way to Halifax) so all flights were
delayed. The flight from Baltimore was two hours late and then the flight to
Halifax was delayed 2 hours which meant a flight that was scheduled to arrive
at 11.30pm at night was now 1.30am. By
the time I got to the residence at Mt St Vincent University it was well after
2.30am and I was unable to get to sleep as a number of other passengers on the
flight who were coming to the Conference arrived over the next hour or so.
The Divine Renovation Conference (my reason for being in
Halifax) has been great and has presented some real challenges. The Parish is
very different to the Church of the Nativity. The Pastors (Frs Michael White -
Nativity - and James Mallon - Halifax) are so different that it is incredible.
Fr Michael is an introvert and Fr James is an extrovert. However, both have
great support who complement their styles and so they make the process work.
Here in Halifax the emphasis is on evangelisation and the
means is the Alpha Program. I suspect many have heard of the program over the
years (it has been around for almost 30 years) but here it has an incredible
impact on the parish and parishioners and it will be interesting to see
how/if/whether we might be able to use it. Much discussion with the PPC in the
months ahead.
We have a Day for Priests today before I fly back to
Ireland and restart my holidays so there will be more reflecting in next weeks
Ramblings from afar.
God
bless you and keep you safe.
PASCHAL OKPON – ORDAINED TO THE DIACONATE:
Many parishioners have met Paschal on a few occasions
especially during Christmas and Easter. Paschal
will be Ordained to the Diaconate at Our
Lady of Lourdes Church on Saturday 24th September at 11am.
Some of Paschal’s fellow seminarians will be attending the event and we are
calling for anyone who is able to billet one or more (at this stage we assume it
would be for Friday and Saturday night) to contact Annie at the Parish Office
6424:2783. Ed Reilly – Secretary Mersey
Leven Parish Pastoral Council.

during June. If you are not already part of this programme and would like to

Due to interest expressed by some parishioners the Care and
Concern Co-ordinating Group will be facilitating a gathering for those in our Parish

other.

the Parish House, 90 Stewart Street, Devonport. Afternoon tea will be provided. If you are
able to attend or would like further information about the meeting, please

Lord,
We pray for those who have been devastated by
recent flooding.
We
remember those whose lives were lost so suddenly.
We
hold in our hearts the families forever changed by grief and sadness.
May
they have the courage to face the long road of rebuilding ahead?
Bless
all those who have lost their homes, property and animals.
Bless
the work of those providing emergency assistance, may their work be guided
By
the grace and strength that comes from you alone.
Help
us to respond with generosity in prayer, in assistance, in aid to the best of
our abilities
And
keep our hearts focused on the needs of those affected, even now the crisis is
over.
We
ask this in Jesus' name,
Amen.
