WEEKLY RAMBLINGS:

They say that the difference between a holiday and being back at work is about …

There are a number of things happening at present which are important:
  • The Planning Application appeared on the gates of both 88 & 90 Stewart Street on Tuesday afternoon and there was an immediate response from me because the plans now intrude right into the driveway and the Parish House land – without any consultation with the Diocese or the Parish so we have asked for an urgent meeting with the Developers (to be held next Tuesday 19th);
  • Fr Phil’s Mother’s funeral during the week – a chance for the Parish and the Community to offer our support and prayers to him and his family;
  • Fr Jim McMahon celebrates 60 years of Priesthood on Thursday (21st) and Fr Peter O’Loughlin celebrates 50 years of Priesthood on Friday (22nd) – our congratulations and prayerful best wishes to them both on these momentous occasions;
  • The children preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation and their families will gather next Saturday, 23rd, from 10am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, for the next stage of their preparation.

The Parish Pastoral Council met this week and a couple of decisions were made that will have a bit of an impact on the life of the Parish in the months ahead. One of the significant things that happened during my time away was the three day Divine Renovation conference I attended in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At the Conference I renewed a friendship with Lorraine McCarthy, Co-ordinator of Catholic Alpha in Australia. Lorraine will be in Hobart on 20th August and I have asked her if she might be available for a gathering in Devonport on Sunday 21st to talk about how we might be able to look at Alpha in our Parish. More details later.

Also, it was decided that the Chair of the Parish Finance Committee should be an ex-officio member of the PPC so that there can be a closer liaison between the two bodies – an exciting step forward and one which I hope will allow new possibilities for Faith Development and Education to be possible through a budgeting process that acknowledges this aspect of Parish Life as important to our growth and future.

Please take care on the roads,

Mersey Leven Parish Community welcome and congratulate ….
Frankie Bartush & Jobe Clemons who are both being baptised this weekend.

PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION – This Sunday:
Peters Pence, is the name traditionally given to an annual contribution or tribute (originally of a penny from each householder holding land of a certain value) paid to the Holy See. While regular contributions go to the local parish or diocese, the Peter's pence collection goes directly to Rome.
“Peter’s Pence’ is the most characteristic expression of the participation of all the faithful in the Bishop of Rome’s charitable initiatives in favour of the universal Church. The gesture has not only a practical value, but also a strong symbolic one, as a sign of communion with the Pope and attention to the needs of one’s brothers; and therefore your service possesses a refined ecclesial character.”
Envelopes for Peter ’s pence collection will be available at all Mass Centres this weekend!

ST MARY'S PENGUIN:
Everyone is warmly welcome to our Soup, Sandwich and Sweets night on Saturday 23rd July after Mass at Penguin.  We are asking if people could bring a plate of sandwiches or a dessert to share. There will be a smorgasbord of delicious soups made by a few of our generous volunteers. Once again all welcome!!
